Breathing: The Foundation of Everything

It All Starts With Breath

Ask any experienced fighter what separates a beginner from someone who knows what they are doing. It is not the kicks. It is not the speed. It is the breathing.

Breathing controls everything. Your energy. Your timing. Your ability to take a hit and keep moving.

The Basics

Breathe in through the nose. Fill the lungs completely. Exhale sharply — "Ush" — on every strike. That exhale does two things: it engages your core and keeps you from holding your breath.

Holding your breath is what makes beginners gas out in two minutes. Proper breathing means you can go round after round.

Breathing as a Weapon

There is an old saying in Thai boxing: if you control the breathing, you control the fight. When you breathe properly, you stay calm. When your opponent is gasping, they panic.

This is 7000-year-old wisdom. Not something invented in a modern fitness studio.

Learning to Breathe

Most people breathe wrong without knowing it. They breathe shallow, into the chest. Proper breathing fills the belly first, then the chest.

In a private session, we work on breathing from the start. It is not the exciting stuff — no one posts breathing drills on social media — but it is what makes everything else work.

Private sessions are $80/hr. Book at daintreethaiboxing.com.
